Stink Bug Exclusion

Choose exclusion over a spray-only visit when the same thing happens every year: a warm afternoon in October, then dozens of shield-shaped bugs on the south and west walls, then bugs inside on the ceiling and around the bathroom light. Spraying the outside walls in early fall does knock down the bugs standing on the siding that week, and it has a real place. What it cannot do is close the half-inch gap behind a warped piece of fascia or an unscreened gable vent, so the following September starts from zero. Exclusion is the only part of stink bug work that is still doing its job a year later. The honest trade-off is cost and access: sealing takes hours and ladders, it costs more than a single perimeter treatment, and gaps above a third story or behind stone veneer sometimes cannot be reached safely — we say so on site rather than after.

Frederick's housing stock gives stink bugs very different doors depending on where you live. In the Downtown Frederick Historic District and the older streets near Baker Park, the openings are usually old ones: wood sash windows that no longer close square, gaps at brick lintels, worn attic louvers, and rowhome party-wall roof edges. In Worman's Mill, Villages of Urbana, Spring Ridge, Tuscarora Knolls and Clover Hill, the pattern shifts to vinyl siding — bugs walk up the wall and slip behind J-channel, under loose starter strip, around dryer and hose-bib penetrations, and through unsealed soffit seams at dormers. Ballenger Creek, Amber Meadows and Hillcrest homes that back onto a tree line, a field edge, or the ground near the Monocacy National Battlefield see heavier fall pressure, because brown marmorated stink bugs feed on trees and crops all summer and then move to the nearest tall, sun-warmed structure. The order matters, and it is the same on every job: identify the insect, map the entry points, seal, treat, then verify at the follow-up. If stink bugs are already inside in November, exclusion still pays — just understand what it does. Insects overwintering in your attic insulation and wall cavities will keep trickling into the living space on warm days until spring; sealing now stops next fall's wave and cuts the population that reaches the walls.
